OnePlus 8 Series Could Be 5G CEO Pete Lau Says as Company Gears for Global Rollout

OnePlus have recently launched the 7T series which includes the OnePlus 7T first uncovered in India in September this year along with the OnePlus 7T Pro and OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition uncovered in London on Thursday. However, all of these handsets are 4G-enabled even the company did unveil a 5G variant of the OnePlus 7 Pro earlier this year. However, the company may take the step to use 5G much more seriously, if comments by the OnePlus CEO on the sidelines of the UK event are anything to go by. It is also possible that all of its devices launched in 2020 will include 5G as standard.

CEO of the company Pete Lau, in collaboration with media after the launch of the OnePlus 7T series, said that the company was looking at the suitability of 5G devices in various countries where it is present, and would plan its device features accordingly. For 2020, a leading trend is definitely that leading devices have 5G, continued Lau, who was speaking through an interpreter.

Speaking about 5G technologies in different countries, things are at various different stages. In India, for example, there will not be 5G availability 2020. Therefore, this has to go back to looking at suitability for products in different regions,” said Lau. It is possible that the company will, therefore, launch its 2020 handsets with 5G to support some markets, Meanwhile, other markets such as India will be ready with support as and when it rolls out.

OnePlus, on May 2019, launched the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G along with the regular SKU of the devices. The handset is exclusive to operator EE in the UK, while other markets receive the 4G SKU of the smartphones. On the other hand, Pete Lau earlier confirmed that OnePlus will launch a second 5G phone in 2019, which could be a 5G variant of the new OnePlus 7T Pro (Review).

The company has also launched the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition which will go on open sale in India on November 5 this year. This is the second time that OnePlus has also collaborated with McLaren and when asked if the collaboration will continue going forward, We are exploring what opportunities lie ahead of us and when we have more news, we will be excited to share it with you
The OnePlus 8 is coming, and as per usual, it's hot on the heels of its predecessor. OnePlus sticks to a strict two-launches-per-year schedule: the OnePlus 7T was officially announced at the company's launch event in India this September, while the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro have been available since May (roughly).Obviously, the OnePlus 8 remains a pipe dream for now, but it’s never too soon to start amassing all the rumors, leaks and hopes for the next-gen iteration of our favorite smartphones. Read on for everything you need to know about the hypothetical OnePlus 8.

OnePlus 8 Release Date

OnePlus Technology has released a new line of OnePlus phones every year since the original OnePlus One in 2014 – so it’s a good bet that the OnePlus 8 will be released sometime in 2020. However, unlike other smartphone manufacturers (such as Apple and Samsung), OnePlus doesn’t have a regular annual event at which it announces new devices, which makes it hard to be more specific. What we can say is that once the OnePlus 8 is unveiled, it will almost certainly be released within a few weeks of the announcement, as has been the case for every OnePlus phone since the OnePlus 2.

OnePlus 8 Price

It’s likely that OnePlus itself hasn’t decided on a price for the OnePlus 8 yet, but we expect it’ll be in a similar range to the company’s most recent OnePlus 7 line of phones.

At launch, the OnePlus 7 costs £499 or £549, depending on the model you buy, while the OnePlus 7 Pro costs between £649 and £799, with three versions to choose from. If the OnePlus 8 also comes in two different models, we expect it’ll come out costing at least £500, with the high-end models possibly surpassing £800.

OnePlus 8 Design

Recent leaks from @OnLeaks and CashKaro.com have appeared on Twitter with key photos showcasing the phone's sleek design. With a fairly decent track record in previous leaks, this could be worth paying attention to. As you can see, the "waterfall" display is making a comeback, alongside a brand new punch-hole display and a triple rear-camera set up (also continued on from previous models).

Whilst these leaks come from a seemingly reputable source it's important, with leaks this far in advance of launch, to take them with a large pinch of salt.

OnePlus 8 Features and Specs

The new T-variant model offers the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset which is originally designed for gaming. With this chipset expect nothing less than flagship handset performance. What's more, OnePlus have added their own version of Google Pay to the device, named OnePlus Pay, to enable contactless payment. Although, be wary as this feature was announced at the launch in India and may only be available there

Fast Battery Charging

The battery is also something to rave about, as a new version of Warp Charge 30 Fast Charging is expected to perform over 20% faster, according to OnePlus, meaning the device could charge completely within an hour.

The OnePlus 7 Pro’s battery is impressive, managing to last more than 18 hours in our tests before shutting down. As it stands, the battery comes in at 3,800mAh. However, given the size of the phone, we would like to have seen a battery larger than 4,000mAh.

Improved Camera

Existing 'Portrait mode' and 'NightScape mode' will be getting some upgrades, although the biggest comes with a new mode altogether in its triple camera set-up: "Macro Lens". Available in the rear camera, it's said to provide impressive macro shots (obviously). There is also the addition of a new 'Super Stable mode' to create more stable video footage.

Waterfall Screen

We now know that the OnePlus 8 will probably be graced by Oppo’s next-generation smartphone display technology. Oppo recently unveiled a prototype of its “waterfall screen” on Twitter, with trusty leaker Ice Universe allowing us to see the new touchscreen in action.

The screen extends over the edges of the phone, giving the eponymous “waterfall” effect. It’s a swish-looking feature that we welcome on the new handset. Ever since the release of the OnePlus One back in 2014, a number of OnePlus phones have shared similarities with Oppo devices, be it overall design or near-identical specs and features. Given the recent render leaks, moreover, this fancy new display is a highly likely addition.

Improved HDR

The OnePlus 8 will sport HDR10+ with a 90Hz refresh rate with a Quad HD+ display. The OnePlus 7 Pro have HDR+10 certification, but when our reviews editor Jonathan Bray put it to the test he felt that the display didn’t look quite right. “Picking out a couple of scenes from the Netflix Original Marco Polo series, everything looked far too dark,” he noted. “Even scenes filmed in broad daylight. There's clearly something broken here.”For a phone with such a large screen, watching and streaming video is a big part of the appeal – and if the HDR component isn’t working to its full potential, you won’t be getting the best possible experience.
