Huawei P40 and Huawei P40 Pro smartphones are the Chinese giant next-generation flagship P-series phones set to launch in 2020. The smartphones should see upgrades in their cameras, processors, and displays at the least. The Huawei P-series phones have developed a reputation for its superior camera performance, and the Huawei P30 series launched this year was on top of the DxoMark list for a significant time.
The successors Huawei P40 and Huawei P40, sadly won't have Google's apps and services on board, a drawback due to the ongoing US-China trade war.
While the official launch is still to happen, a host of details about the Huawei P40 and Huawei P40 Pro is already known. Here's everything we know about the two phones so far
Huawei P40 Release Date
Huawei P40 and Huawei P40 Pro exact launch date are not known, but CEO Richard Yu confirmed in an interview that the phones will launch sometime in March 2020. The Executive of the Huawei also mentioned that the Huawei P40 series smartphones will highlight a remarkable new design, and will offer improved performance and photography experience compared to their predecessors.
There's also a possibility that the Huawei P40 Lite be launched alongside the two phones, and this is reported to be nothing but the rebranded version of the Huawei Nova 6 SE launched earlier this month.
Huawei P40 Specifications
The phones should run on Android 10 based on EMUI skin on top and should feature dual-SIM slots as well. As mentioned earlier, the Huawei P40 and Huawei P40 Pro phones will integrate Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) core on-board, which means they won't come with Google's suite of apps and services. A recent leak suggests that the Huawei P40 will come with an ‘Advanced Horizontal Display' and a pill-shaped cut-out for multiple selfie cameras. If true, this is a considerable upgrade from the waterdrop-style notch seen on the Huawei P30.
The leak also suggests that the Huawei P40 will sport a 6.57-inch full-HD+ or 2K AMOLED display with DCI-P3 and HDR support, however, a separate report claims that the size of the display should max out at 6.1-inch to 6.2-inch. The Huawei P40 Pro variant, on the other hand, is expected to sport curved edges on all sides that measure 6.5-inches to 6.7-inches. It is tipped to have a unique metal fold on all the edges that protect the display from falls.
The phones should be powered by the latest HiSilicon Kirin flagship processor. The cameras on the phones are still a mystery and render suggest that the Huawei P40 will sport a quad-camera setup, while the Huawei P40 Pro should sport five cameras at the back. Both the phones should have a glass back panel, support a USB Type-C port, and come with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The phones are reported to not come with 3.5mm audio jack support. More details on the phones should be revealed as the launch date nears, and we will keep updating this copy as and when something crops up online.
Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that the Huawei P40 Pro will come with 10x optical zoom support. It will feature an 8-megapixel periscope telephoto lens with a large aperture of f/4.0. He reportedly explains that Huawei will achieve this 10x zoom feature by using two mirrors and a prism inside the camera of the Huawei P40 Pro, instead of just the prism on the predecessor
Huawei P30 Pro that comes with a 5x zoom lens. If true, the Huawei P40 Pro will be the first phone in the world to come with a 10x optical zoom.
Huawei P40 Release Date
Huawei will officially launch its P40 series of smartphones in March next year. Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei (T.C.B.G) has announced that the Huawei P40 series phones will go official in March 2020. And even though he did not delve into details about the phones, the company's past launches suggest that the Huawei P40 and Huawei P40 Pro are in the pipeline. The Huawei P40 series phones have also been confirmed to run Android 10, but without Google apps and services, thanks to the ban imposed by the US government.
With an interview with the French press, Yu reportedly uncovered that Huawei P40 series smartphones will go official in March, but he did not specify a launch date. The executive of Huawei also mentioned that the Huawei P40 series smartphones will feature a remarkable new design, and will offer improved performance and photography experience compared to their predecessors, the Huawei P30 and Huawei P30 Pro. The Chinese smartphone maker might also launch a Huawei P40 Lite, which is reportedly a rebranded version of Huawei Nova 6 SE.
Yu further revealed that the Huawei P40 series phones will run Android 10 with the EMUI custom skin on top, and Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) cores onboard. The latter is Huawei's alternative to Google Mobile Services (GMS) core, which means the Huawei P40 series phones won't have Google's suite of apps and services like Chrome, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google Photos, and Google Play Services.
While the Chinese market is accustomed to it, users in other markets might find the experience of using an Android phone without Google apps and services extremely limiting.
But this is not a first for Huawei. The company's latest flagship, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, was launched in China without Google apps and services but hasn't been made widely available in the international markets, including India. Huawei is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to bring in developers and build an app ecosystem for the HMS core until the in-house Harmony OS is ready as an Android alternative.
Huawei P40 Tipped to Feature Hole-Punch Design With HDR-Capable AMOLED Display
Starting with the Huawei P40 leak, tipster @RODENT950 on Twitter claims the Huawei P40 will come with an ‘Advanced Horizontal Display' and claims that it will sport a pill-shaped cut-out for multiple selfie cameras. To recall, the Huawei P30 had a waterdrop-style notch upfront. Of course, this is a rather early leak, so take it with a pinch of salt. The tipster suggests a 6.57-inch full-HD+ or 2K AMOLED display with DCI-P3 and HDR support.
Lastly, a placeholder renders accompanying the leaked specs suggests that the phone will use Leica optics, which doesn't come as a surprise as previous Huawei P-series phones have done the same.
Coming to the Huawei P40 Lite, the same tipster suggests that the Huawei Nova 6 SE launched last week, will be launched as the Huawei P40 Lite in other markets next year. He also shares a render in Black, showing off the hole-punch display, and the quad rear camera setup backed by AI features.
If this is true, the Huawei P40 Lite will have a 6.4-inch full-HD+ display, Kirin 810 SoC, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, a 48-megapixel main rear camera, a 16-megapixel selfie camera, and a 4,200mAh battery. Of course, the company could tweak on the specifications in the rebranded version when it launches in international markets.
The Huawei P30 series was launched this year in March, and the Huawei P40 series should launch in the same month next year if the company keeps up with the tradition. Leaks should pick up pace as the launch date nears, and more clarity on the design and specifications of the next-gen Huawei flagship will be achieved.
Design
It is too tough to imagine that Huawei is going to reinvent the wheel when it comes to the design of the Huawei P40, with the most notable changes set to come in terms of camera upgrades.
One thing that the latest Nova 6 SE will be re-packaged as the P40 Lite could hold the key to Huawei's design: by looking at its four-camera setup, punch-hole selfie camera and screen structure we can get a glimpse of some of the design influences that will make it to the P40 range. The overall build is tipped to remain unchanged.
It is not such a bad thing, though. The Huawei P30 is one of the sleekest and advanced smartphones to have hit the shelves in 2019, featuring what's fast been dubbed a sandwich design, in which a sheet of Gorilla Glass is affixed to the rear of an aluminum frame, and a high-resolution screen is mounted on the front.
While it is to remain the same for the Huawei P40 the firm is believed to have made a couple of changes the corners are rumored to have been square-off to make it more comfortable to hold a design choice with Samsung's Galaxy Note line and there is a chance the notch could be omitted.
Unrealistic reasoning we know but it is not entirely out of the realms of possibility. There is a number of Chinese companies that have taken a stab at removing the notch some resulting in eccentric pop-up front-facing cameras, and some finding a way to make them in beneath the screen so it is safe to assume Huawei is working on it.
Camera
When the Huawei P30 Pro came out with four cameras, it was one of the first smartphones to do so and even the P30’s three were impressive.
But now more affordable devices have four cameras, like the Honor 20, so one way for Huawei to continue its photography strength, and distinguish itself from the competition, would be to add yet another lens.
On the other hand, our top choice for this extra lens would be a Motorola One Action-style 'Action Cam' for recording video, as video-specific cameras are things we haven’t seen too much in cameras.
An anamorphic camera would also be great for recording video, as that type of lens is used by professional film-makers as it letterboxes the footage and captures lens flare, with other perks too.
Wireless Charging
This is something we ask for in every new phone, as it’s a feature that’s becoming bigger over time, but wireless charging on the Huawei P40 would be a really useful feature that would fit its premium status.
We are hopeful this feature will be added the Huawei P30 Pro had wireless charging, as did the Mate 20 Pro, so it’s probably on a matter of time before Huawei brings the feature to its non-pro phones.
Display Technology
If we were, to sum up, the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro displays, it’d be ‘good not great’ – the OLED is HDR10, which is fine for viewing content, but nothing on competitors with QuadHD or even 4K displays.
Huawei is trying to be competitive in the camera department and to view increasingly amazing pictures you are going to need better and better displays, so it would make sense for Huawei to update its range.
Perhaps by fitting the Huawei P40 with AMOLED tech on the screen, with QuadHD or even 4K, Huawei could stay ahead of the competition.
