Samsung Galaxy Z Flip was launched at the company's Galaxy S20 flagship series launch event in San Francisco on Tuesday. The South Korean giant's second foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip features Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) on what the company calls an Infinity Flex display. The company also offers it will give buyers access to YouTube Premium.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip also features a ‘Flex mode', something the company worked with Google to achieve – giving certain apps a different split-screen mode when the display is partially folded. It will only be available in limited quantities, in select markets.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is a dual-SIM smartphone, with one eSIM and one Nano-SIM card slot. It runs Android 10. The main, foldable display is a 6.7-inch full-HD (1080x2636 pixels, 21.9:9, 425ppi) Dynamic AMOLED panel – which as we mentioned is called an Infinity Flex display. On the outside, is a 1.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a 112x300 pixels resolution and a pixel density of 303ppi. It's powered by an unnamed 7nm octa-core SoC, with a maximum clock speed of 2.95GHz, paired with 8GB of RAM.

It is included dual rear camera setup on the Galaxy Z Flip, with 12-megapixel wide-angle camera (f/1.8, 1.4-micron pixels, 78-degree FoV) and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2, 1.12-micron pixels, 123-degree FoV, OIS). The company is also touting HDR10+ video recording. On the front, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip features a 10-megapixel (f/2.4, 1.22-micron pixels, 80-degree FoV).

There is 256GB of inbuilt storage on the Samsung Galaxy Flip, not expandable via microSD card. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0, USB Type-C, NFC, and GPS (A-GPS). Sensors onboard include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, fingerprint sensor (on the side), gyroscope, magnetometer, and proximity sensor.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip measures 87.4x73.6x17.33mm when folded, and 167.3x73.6x7.2mm when unfolded. It weighs 183 grams. The device is a single mono speaker on the smartphone.

Design

  • Clamshell design
  • 6.7-inch display, 1-inch external display
  • 167.9 x 73.6 x 6.9-7.2mm (open); 87.4 x 73.6 x 15.4-17.3mm (closed), 183g
  • Black, gold or purple options

The Z Flip dramatically different from the original Fold is in its design the second-gen folding phone will sport a clamshell design, so it is a smaller folding device akin to the Moto Razr. It is coming in black gold and purple options.

There is a bezel around the display hardly the edge-to-edge experience we have come to expect from Samsung. That display is confirmed to be 6.7-inches.

The pivot is similar to the existing Galaxy Fold but Samsung says it's good for over 200,000 folds. This pivot offers Flex Mode, meaning you can open the hinge at different angles, with the content adjusting to fit the device. Samsung says that there are unique fibers inside the device to keep out dirt and debris.

The outside of the phone Gorilla Glass 6 and there's a small secondary display on the outside which will be a 1-inch display that you can use to check notifications, but also use as a display for the camera, so you can use the main camera as a selfie camera. There will be a fingerprint sensor on the side of the smartphone. There will be a Tom Browne special edition of the phone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Display

  • 6.7-inch Infinity Flex display, AMOLED
  • 21.9:9 aspect, 2636 x 1080 pixels, 425ppi
  • 1.1-inch, 300 x 112 pixel external display, 303ppi

The primary display measures 6.7-inches on the diagonal with a resolution of 2636 x 1080 pixels for 425PPI and it has a tall 21.9:9 aspect. That is taller than most other phones, even Sony's 21:9 Xperia 1. The display is being referred to as Infinity Flex, with a punch hole for the front-facing camera.

It is also a coated inflexible glass aiming to add more protection and reduce those scratches on the screen.

There is a small AMOLED display on the outside of the handset where you'll be able to glance at the information when the phone is closed; it measures 1.1-inches with a resolution of 300 x 116 pixels. You will be able to use this display in conjunction with the rear camera, so you can use the main camera for taking selfies, rather than using the front camera.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Cameras

The first thing to note about the cameras is that there are dual cameras on the outside the primary camera here is 12-megapixels. That appears to be the same camera as the Galaxy S10 based on the specs rather than the enhanced camera that is just appeared on the Galaxy S20.

The secondary camera is also 12-megapixels offering an ultra-wide view at 123 degrees, with an f/2.2 aperture.

On the other hand, for the front-facing camera, Samsung is going with a single punch hole camera and this is a 10-megapixel sensor - probably the same as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, with f/2.4 aperture. The front camera offers autofocus.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Battery and Charging Speed

You get a 3300mAh battery which should get you through all day and it is something that has been engineered to fit in a tight space. But we really, really wish there was a cell as big as 4000mAh.

The Samsung has thrown in 18W of fast charging over USB-C and the phone is Adaptive Fast Charging compatible which means your Quick Charge 3.0 / 2.0 adapter will work just fine with this phone and wireless charging is there too and you can top up the Z Flip at a pace of 9W, which is surprisingly slow compared to every other flagship from Samsung.

You also get Wireless PowerShare so you can top up your Galaxy Buds or any other phone if you like. On the weighted end, the phone is surprisingly light at just 183 grams. I said surprisingly because the smartphone turns into a monstrosity with dimensions of 167.9x73.6x6.9-7.2mm when fully opened.

Software

The Galaxy Z Flip is equipped and runs Android 10 out of the box, which is awesome obviously and it runs Samsung's custom skin which is One UI 2.0 in this case. Personally, One UI hits home for me every single time as it is a perfect combination of features and ease of use. It is not an in your face UI in any case which is nothing more than a big win.

The folding part of the smartphone is there for a reason and it comes into play as Flex Mode. What does this is treated the upper and bottom halves of the screen as two independent screens? if you are running Google Duo you can use the upper half of the screen for the video while the bottom half can show you on-screen controls. While this feature does seem cool and promising we are not sure how well it will sit with developers.

Galaxy Z Flip clients even get access to YouTube Premium. We are not certain if this is a limited time thing, but yeah, this is definitely going to win hearts.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Price

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip priced will be set at $1,380 (roughly Rs. 98,400). On another hand, the company says it will go on sale in limited quantities starting in selected markets from February 14 itself. These markets include South Korea and the United States. It will be available in two different color Mirror Black and Mirror Purple initially before being made available in Mirror Gold Samsung says.
