Vivo Apex 2020 has finally been uncovered after many teasers. The phone brings many numerous features – no physical buttons, no notch or hole-punch or even a pop-up selfie camera setup, and amped up optical image stabilization.

The Vivo Apex 2020 packs a 120-degree curved edgeless display, giving the illusion of a borderless front, and it has a unique in-display selfie camera that hides behind the screen. Moreover, interesting titbits include a unique ‘instant photobomb removal' feature, up to 5x to 7.5x continuous optical zoom, and gimbal-like optical image stabilization in the main camera.

Vivo on Friday declared the Apex 2020 concept phone, and one of the big highlights is its display. The phone dons a 6.45-inch FullView edgeless display that bends at an angle of up to 120-degree on both sides. This eliminates the side edges and offers an illusion of no borders from the front view.

Because the side edges are now almost completely gone, the physical buttons on the sides have been replaced by virtual pressure-sensing buttons. While there's no bezel on the sides whatsoever, the top forehead and bottom chin are almost gone as well. This is achieved using an under-screen selfie camera, which means the company didn't have to resort to any cutouts for revealing the camera.

The Vivo Apex 2020 phone has a 16-megapixel front camera behind the screen, and it is equipped with a 4-in-1 super-pixel photosensitive chip to enable good quality photos. It increases the light transmittance of the screen right above the front camera to six times more than any other part of the screen.

Furthermore, Vivo reduced optical interference, diffraction, and stray flashes through a series of algorithm optimizations to increase photography quality. Vivo Apex 2020 concept device is also the first to offer high-magnification continuous optical zoom – with magnifications between 5x zoom to 7.5x zoom. The phone also uses a four-group lens combination to achieve real-time focus even when in zoom. All of this is incorporated into a 6.2mm thick camera module at the back.

The concept device integrates a 48-megapixel main camera inside a gimbal-like structure to achieve optical image stabilization (OIS) in the front-back and left-right inclined directions. The company claims that this technique extends the stabilization angle by 200 percent when compared to the traditional OIS system.

What this means is that the Vivo Apex 2020 concept phone is capable of taking significantly less shaky and blurred photos and videos, compared to the other smartphones. The company even goes as far as to say that no additional equipment is required to take long exposure night photos with the Apex 2020.

Moreover, the Apex 2020 phone is touted to feature 60W Wireless Super FlashCharge technology that claims to charge a 2,000mAh battery in 20 minutes. More interesting features include the third generation screen SoundCasting technology, Instant photobomb removal, and Voice Tracking Auto-Focus. As the name proposes, the instant photobomb removal technology will allow users to eliminate passers-by in the background from their images.

The phone is probably to reach the market but we might see some of the features included in the Apex 2020 in future Vivo phones. Hence, the company hasn't shared pricing.

Design

The idea that first began with the Apex 2019, Vivo has been pursuing the idea of a portless, zero openings phone for some time. The Vivo Apex 2020 continues with this theme, delivering an all-in-one unibody design.

'But what about the charging port?' we hear you ask. Vivo's current idea is for a magnetic clip-on charger that will recharge the battery, while the over-the-air transfer of images and files, using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, is already common practice.

Display

That singular body is further achieved by a screen that almost wraps around it. We explored the idea of a Waterfall Display in 2019, which the Apex 2020 takes to the next level with its so-called '120° FullView Edgeless Display'.

The important part of that title is the 120-degrees: it means the sides of the screen bend to such an acute angle that, face-on, you can't see any side bezel whatsoever. The screen 'spills' over the sides, like a waterfall', giving an immersive view.

The display is a 6.45-inch panel, so very much in keeping with today's large flagship devices, but that's as much as Vivo is giving away in its press release for now. We assume it will be OLED, but there's no mention of refresh rate (don't let that '120' on the main image confuse you - that's to do with the angle, not the refresh), resolution and such like at this stage.

Camera

Here where things get really interesting. There is no notch no pop-up camera no punch-hole to disrupt that screen dominant design. Vivo much like Oppo declared previously will use an under-the-screen camera, negating the need for any breaks to the visual design.

At the point when the Apex 2020 turns into a consumer reality usually with some adjustments, granted, but it will likely be the NEX 4 or similar it is likely to be among the first smartphones to market with an in-display camera.

60W FlashCharge

Even there are no ports the Apex 2020 does come with fast-charging equipped 60W FlashCharge no less which is much like Oppo's Super VOOC technology. In the Vivo Apex 2020, that means a 2,000mAh cell can be recharged from zero to full in just 20 minutes granted most flagship smartphones have batteries double that capacity these days - but there is nothing stopping Vivo putting two such cells in the phone which charge simultaneously meaning a true 20-minute recharge cycle could be possible

Optical Zoom

That is not all on the camera front. The Apex 2020 integrates a 'four-group lens combination' - with two groups fixed and two groups movable - which can handle focusing and zooming at the same time. This periscope zoom design means the Apex 2020 can move its lenses to acquire 5x to 7.5x zoom, but not the digitally acquired hybrid zoom of most current flagships, rather genuine optical zoom - and from a phone that's just 6.2mm thick!

Furthermore, the main camera is suspended on a gimbal-like structure within the device, which means it's kind-of floating. That should help to make for much smoother, steadier video capture - even better than current optical image stabilization (OIS) systems, Vivo claims, with up to double the counter for hand movement.
