iPhone-SE-2020

iPhone SE 2020 is finally official, after months of anticipation. With it, Apple has unveiled the most affordable iPhone model in its current lineup. Called the new iPhone SE or iPhone SE 2nd generation, it was originally rumored to debut as the iPhone SE 2 and later reported as the iPhone 9.

It retains the 4.7-inch size that's available on the iPhone 8 and previous regular iPhone models — not the Plus ones, of course. Despite being the most affordable model, the new iPhone is powered by the Apple A13 Bionic chip, which is powering the iPhone 11 series. The iPhone SE 2020 also runs iOS 13 out-of-the-box and comes with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

Apple has provided the 4.7-inch Retina HD IPS LCD display on the iPhone SE (2020) that has 750x1334 pixels resolution and True Tone tech to adjust white balance. It offers a peak brightness of 625 nits. There is support for Dolby Vision and HDR10. The display panel features Haptic Touch support, seen in newer iPhone models.

Under the hood, there is the A13 Bionic chip that is a part of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The new iPhone also has a single 12-megapixel camera sensor (f/1.8 aperture + OIS) at the back along with a LED True Tone to flash with Slow Sync. It offers 4K video recording at up to 60fps, and Smart HDR for photos. There is a sapphire crystal lens cover protecting the rear camera.

Despite a single rear camera, the iPhone SE 2020 offers a Portrait mode, using computational photography enabled by the Neural Engine on the Apple A13 Bionic SoC. For selfies and video chat, there is a 7-megapixel camera at the front, with an f/2.2 aperture.

Connectivity options on the iPhone SE 2020 include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ax, Wi-Fi calling, NFC, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, and a Lightning port. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack. The new iPhone also has the Touch ID button — instead of the Face ID support that requires a special array of sensors. It is protected by a sapphire crystal.

Design-wise, the iPhone SE 2020 looks quite similar to the iPhone 8 that was launched as the successor to the iPhone 7 in September 2017. Built using aerospace-grade aluminum and durable glass, it measures 138.4x67.3x7.3mm and weighs 148 grams. It also features an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, meaning it can survive immersion in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. However, liquid damage is not covered under warranty, so you should be very careful regardless.

As is usual with Apple, the company has not detailed the size of the battery or the amount of RAM on the iPhone SE (2020). It is said to last about as long as the iPhone 8, with up to 13 hours of video playback time, and 40 hours of audio playback time.

However, it does support fast charging, charging up to 50 percent in 30 minutes with an 18W charger - not bundled. Wireless charging is also supported, using the Qi wireless charging standard. Sensors onboard include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, three-axis gyroscope, and a proximity sensor.

Commenting on the launch of the new iPhone SE, Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said, "The first iPhone SE was a hit with many customers who loved its unique combination of small size, high-end performance, and affordable price; the new second-generation iPhone SE builds on that great idea and improves on it in every way including our best-ever single-camera system for great photos and videos while still being very affordable.

iPhone SE features the industry-leading performance of A13 Bionic that enables great battery life, takes stunning Portrait mode and Smart HDR photos, shoots amazing videos with stereo audio, is great for games and super fast web surfing, and is built with the same industry-leading security features our customers expect. We can't wait to get iPhone SE into customers' hands."

 iPhone SE 2020 Features

The Apple iPhone SE 2 launches with an impressive design and also with a powerful processor. On the other hand, loaded with useful camera features it impresses with its photography capabilities as well and includes a great option if you are looking for a low range Apple iPhone.

iPhone SE 2020 Design

The new iPhone SE should look familiar, as it's based on the iPhone 8 and it's a 4.7-inch display. In fact, the latest iPhone SE is replacing the iPhone 8 in Apple's lineup. The handset is made of aluminum glass and there is a familiar Touch ID button underneath the screen for unlocking the handset authorizing app downloads and using Apple Pay.

The iPhone SE 2020 is available in three colors: black, white and Red. Apple says it uses a seven-layer color process in order to achieve a precise hue, and the aluminum band is color-matched.

One thing that is nice to see at this price is that the iPhone SE is IP67-rated for water resistance. That means the phone can withstand being submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.

iPhone SE 2020 Display

The iPhone SE 2020 includes the features of a 4.7-inch Retina Display with a wide color gamut True Tone technology, which means it can adjust the white balance to match the ambient light. The resolution is the same as the iPhone though, at 1334 x 750 pixels, so this is not a full HD panel. Still, you get Dolby Vision and HDR 10 support.

There is no 3D Touch here as there was on the iPhone 8. On the other hand, the iPhone SE supports Haptic Touch for performing various Quick Actions. This includes previewing messages and rearranging apps, as well as moving the cursor around in text fields.

iPhone SE 2020 Cameras

This is not just some recycled camera experience. The new iPhone SE features a 12MP camera with an f/1.8 aperture, which is similar to the iPhone XR, but Apple says that this is its best single-camera system ever. That's because the iPhone SE leverages the image signal processor and Neural Engine in the A13 Bionic chip to offer computational photography benefits the iPhone 8 -- and even iPhone XR -- can't match.

For example, you get Portrait Mode along with six portrait lighting effects, and you can adjust the depth control. Apple can do this without two lenses because of semantic rendering. You'll also get other advanced camera features, including Smart HDR, which can render clear faces even with bright backgrounds, optical image stabilization, auto-white balance, and autofocus up to 3x faster in low light versus the previous iPhone SE.

The front 7MP camera can take portraits with bokeh effects as well, thanks to a technology called monocular depth estimation. Last but not least, the iPhone SE can record 4K video at 60 fps, and it offers cinematic stabilization for smoother-looking footage.

The only major camera bummer on the new iPhone SE is the lack of a Night Mode; for that, you'll have to step up to the iPhone 11. But Apple says that you should enjoy better low-light performance overall.

Battery Life and Charging

The iPhone SE should offer the same long battery life as the iPhone 8, which was rated for 12 hours of Internet usage. But we'll have to see how long the device lasts on our own battery test, which involves continuous web surfing on 4G LTE, to see if the new iPhone SE can make our best phone battery life list.

The good news is that the iPhone SE 2020 supports fast 18W charging, but you'll need to spring for the adapter, as the in-box charger supports only 5W. The iPhone SE also supports Qi wireless charging, and there's plenty of great options on our best wireless charging list.

iPhone SE 2020 vs iPhone 11

Check out our iPhone SE 2020 vs iPhone 11 face-off for our in-depth comparison, but these are the essential differences between the two phones. The iPhone SE costs $300 less at $399 vs $699 for the iPhone 11, and the iPhone SE has a smaller display (4.7 vs 6.1 inches). The iPhone SE comes with a single rear camera, compared to two rear shooters on the iPhone 11, one of which is an ultra-wide camera.

Another key difference between the iPhone SE and iPhone 11 is how you unlock the device. The iPhone SE uses a Touch ID sensor, while the iPhone 11 features Face ID. In general, we prefer the latter, but Touch ID works well and very quickly. Both the iPhone SE and iPhone 11 are powered by Apple's A13 Bionic processor and offer wireless charging.

iPhone SE 2020 vs iPhone 8

The $399 iPhone SE replaces the $449 iPhone 8 in Apple's lineup, and you are getting a better phone for less money. The new iPhone SE 2020 is very similar to the iPhone 8, but there are some important differences. The first is the A13 Bionic processor, which is notably more powerful than the A11 Bionic chip in the iPhone 8.

The new iPhone SE also promises a better camera experience. The rear 12MP and front 7MP cameras have the same resolution, but the iPhone SE benefits from the A13 Bionic chip's computational photography enhancements. This includes Portrait Mode and portraits lighting effects for the rear and front cameras.

Finally, while we expect that the battery capacity of the iPhone SE is similar to the iPhone 8's, the A13 chip inside the new iPhone SE could help Apple's newer phone squeeze out more endurance.
