Deep Water

Deep Water is an upcoming erotic thriller film directed by Adrian Lyne, based on the novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith, from a screenplay by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson. The film stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, with Tracy Letts, Lil Rel Howery, Finn Wittrock, Dash Mihok, Jacob Elordi, Kristen Connolly and Rachel Blanchard appearing in supporting roles, and marks Lyne's return to filmmaking after an 18-year absence since his last film Unfaithful (2002)

20th Century Studios will release the film in the U.S. on November 13, 2020. A married couple who have fallen out of love with each other begin playing deadly mind games against one another that begins seeing those around them dying.

The project began development in 2013, with Adrian Lyne set to direct and Fox 2000 set to finance. Fox 2000 sold the rights to New Regency in 2018. In August 2019, the project saw new developments; Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas agreed to star, with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures agreed to handle the distribution via their 20th Century Fox label. In October 2019, Tracy Letts and Rachel Blanchard joined the cast of the film.

Filming began in New Orleans on November 4, 2019, with the additions of Dash Mihok, Lil Rel Howery, Jacob Elordi, Kristen Connolly, Jade Fernandez, and Finn Wittrock to the cast. In December 2019, Michael Braun joined the cast of the film.

Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas are in negotiations to star in the erotic thriller “Deep Water” with Adrian Lyne directing and New Regency fully financing.

If the deals are signed, production would start in November with a release through New Regency’s deal with Fox. Zach Helm and Sam Levinson wrote the script, which is based on a 1957 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. The story follows a small-town couple in a loveless marriage in which the wife is allowed to take lovers as long as she does not desert the family. However, complications arise when the husband takes credit for the unsolved murder of one of the former lovers.

New Regency’s Arnon Milchan, Garrett Basch, and Steven Zaillian are producing with Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady and Ben Forkner. Lyne set up the project at Fox 2000 in 2013 and New Regency bought control of it last year.

Affleck will next appear in a Warner Bros. movie, unofficially titled “The Way Back,” in which he plays a high school basketball coach and recovering addict at his alma mater. Gavin O’Connor directed.

De Armas, who broke out in “Blade Runner 2049,” is about to begin shooting the Netflix film “Blonde,” in which she plays Marilyn Monroe. She will also star in Bond 25.

Lyne’s directing credits include “Fatal Attraction,” “9½ Weeks,” “Flashdance,” “Indecent Proposal,” and “Jacob’s Ladder.” His last film was 2002’s “Unfaithful,” starring Diane Lane in an Oscar-nominated performance.

Affleck is repped by WME. Lyne is repped by ICM Partners and de Armas by CAA, Impression Entertainment and Grubman, Shire, Meiselas & Sacks. The news was first reported by Deadline.
