Clifford the Big Red Dog

Clifford the Big Red Dog is an upcoming live-action/computer-animated family comedy film directed by Walt Becker and written by Jay Scherick, David Ronn, Annie Mumolo, and Stan Chervin. It is based on Norman Bridwell's series of children's books of the same name. The film stars Darby Camp, Jack Whitehall, John Cleese, Sienna Guillory, Kenan Thompson, and Rosie Perez, as well as the voice of David Alan Grier.

In May 2012, it was reported that Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment would produce a live-action/animated film based on the book. Matt Lopez was hired to write the script while Chris Meledandri and Deborah Forte were to produce, but in July 2013, it was reported that Illumination canceled the project.

On September 13, 2013, it was reported that the film was still in development at Universal Pictures with David Bowers in talks to direct the film. Like the 2011 film Hop, the titular dog character will be animated while the other characters will be live-action. In 2016, Paramount Pictures had purchased the rights to develop a live-action and animated hybrid film.

On September 25, 2017, it was reported that Walt Becker had been hired to direct from a script being re-written by Ellen Rapoport, and from the original written by Justin Malen, which would be produced by Forte through her Silvertongue Films banner. On December 25, 2019, the photo of the film was leaked, revealing the computer-generated form of Clifford in the live-action scenery. Principal photography began in July 2019 in New York City.

One of the most beloved picture book series of all-time, Clifford the Red Dog by Norman Bridwell, is finally headed to the big screen. Eighty Clifford books were published between 1963 and 2015 (Bridwell passed away in 2014), and the books are storytime staples at schools and libraries worldwide. The lovable big red dog is the official mascot of his publisher, Scholastic, and helped define the publishing house in its early days.

It was turned into a successful animated series on PBS in 2000 and was previously a Scholastic Direct-to-VHS tape series as well. Now, Clifford and his girl Emily are on their way to the silver screen in a new live-action adventure. The movie is scheduled to release from Paramount on November 13, 2020. It has been in development since 2012 when Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment banded together to make a hybrid film that would mix live-action elements and CGI animation.

The film was originally scheduled for a 2016 release, but instead, Paramount Pictures bought the rights in 2016 and took it in a new direction. The movie will star Darby Camp (Big Little Lies, The Christmas Chronicles, NOS4A2) as Emily and Jack Whitehall (Bad Education, Good Omens, Bounty Hunters) as her Uncle Casey, a new character created for the movie. The camp was born in 2007 and has been acting since she was a toddler, and already has several well-established credits under her belt and can easily carry the movie.

A lot of Clifford fans are appalled by the early CGI and hope that there will be a lot of tweaking between now and November. When the first CGI look at Sonic the Hedgehog dropped online early in 2018, there was a huge backlash and the studio re-did the animation.

Even the movie adaptation of Cats underwent a CGI revision after releasing its first trailer and even updated the movie with a second CGI file this past week. This is still a very early look at Clifford and the final version will likely look much different. Stay tuned to BroadwayWorld Books for more updates on Clifford the Big Red Dog throughout the yea.

Paramount’s untitled Clifford the Red Dog movie is set to prance into theaters on Nov. 13, 2020, the eve of the lucrative Thanksgiving box office corridor.

Walt Becker (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip) is directing the big-screen adaptation of Norman Bridwell's beloved children's book series about a 25-foot-tall red dog and his owner, a child named Emily Elizabeth. A popular animated Clifford series has been a fixture on PBS since 2000.

Rugrats, another Paramount family pic, will now open Jan. 29, 2021, instead of Nov. 13, 2020.

In a separate move, Paramount has taken Are You Afraid of the Dark? off its 2019 release calendar. The adaptation of the 1990s anthology series was to have opened Oct. 4, in advance of Halloween. No new date has been set.
