Free Guy

Free Guy is an upcoming American science fiction action comedy film directed by Shawn Levy from a screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn and a story by Lieberman. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi. The film is scheduled to be released on December 11, 2020, by 20th Century Studios.

In the open-world video game Free City, an amalgamation of Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite, Guy (Reynolds) is a non-player character (NPC) working as a bank teller. Thanks to a code developed by programmers Milly (Comer) and Keys (Keery) inserted into Free City by the publisher Antoine (Waititi), Guy becomes aware of his world being a video game, and takes steps to make himself the hero, creating a race against time to save the game before the developers can shut it down.

Free Guy had been in development at 20th Century Fox prior to its acquisition by Disney and is one of the first Fox films to continue production under Disney ownership, as well as under the studio's new name 20th Century Studios. Ryan Reynolds, who produced the film along with Shawn Levy, said "I haven’t been this fully immersed and engaged in something since Deadpool".

The film started principal photography in Boston in May 2019, including around the city's Financial District. Filming also took place in downtown Worcester, Massachusetts, and Framingham, Massachusetts, in the former Framingham Bank building.

Free Guy will be directed by Shawn Levy, a longtime producer, who’s directorial CV includes entries such as the trio of Night at the Museum movies, Vince Vaugh/Owen Wilson Google romp The Internship, Steve Carrell/Tina Fey rom-com Date Night, Hugh Jackman-headlined Rock’em Sock’em Robots actioner Real Steel, and has been helming episodes of Netflix’s pop culture-invading horror hybrid series, Stranger Things.

He and Reynolds picked up Free Guy as a spec script written by Matt Lieberman in 2016, who worked on the Kurt Russell comedy, The Christmas Chronicles, and the remake of the classic 1980s robot comedy, Short Circuit. Levy also serves as a producer via his 21 Laps shingle, joined by star Ryan Reynolds via Maximum Effort and (The CW’s Arrowverse maestro) Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, fulfilling a multiyear deal signed by his Berlanti Productions. Adam Kolbrenner will also produce.

Free Guy Cast

  • Jodie Comer as Milly / Molotov Girl
  • Joe Keery as Keys
  • Lil Rel Howery as Buddy
  • Utkarsh Ambudkar as Mouser
  • Taika Waititi as Antoine

YouTube personalities Seán William McLoughlin, Tyler Blevins, Imane Any, and Lannan Eacott have cameos

Ryan Reynolds plays an NPC literally named “Guy” as bland as they come, he surprisingly begins developing artificial intelligence, much to the chagrin of the human players around him in this virtual reality open-world game. For example, newly minted Emmy winner Jodie Comer plays Molotov Girl, a gamer with some secret history related to the events around her. Indeed, she and another programmer played by Stranger Things‘ Joe Keery intended to allow NPCs to learn some degree of self-awareness from their experiences but never expected a character to become sentient.

The cast is also rounded out by Taika Waititi in a decidedly more comic supporting part. He plays Antoine, the CEO of the company who created Guy’s game. Lil Rey Howery and Channing Tatum also appear.

Free Guy Release Date

Free Guy is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on December 11, 2020. The film was initially scheduled for release on July 3, 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On October 3, 2019, 20th Century Fox released a "Meet the Cast" promotional video, in which Reynolds and Waititi claim they are pleased to have the opportunity to work together for the first time, despite Comer and Keery pointing out that they worked together previously on the critically panned film Green Lantern
