The Courier

The Courier is a 2020 historical drama film directed by Dominic Cooke about the work between a British businessman Greville Wynne, recruited as an MI-6 agent, and Soviet spy Oleg Penkovsky, who passed information to the West that helped defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

It stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Wynne, alongside Rachel Brosnahan, Jessie Buckley, Merab Ninidze, Angus Wright, and Kirill Pirogov. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on 24 January 2020 and is scheduled to be released in the United States on 28 August 2020, and in the United Kingdom on 30 October 2020.

On 1 May 2018, it was announced that FilmNation Entertainment was producing a film about British spy Greville Wynne from a script by Tom O’Connor. Dominic Cooke is set to direct the film and produce alongside O’Connor, Ben Pugh, Rory Aitken, Adam Ackland, Josh Varney, and Leah Clarke. Production companies involved with the film include SunnyMarch. Principal photography for the film commenced on 15 October 2018 and it lasted until 7 December 2018

The Courier tells the "true story of the British businessman who helped the CIA penetrate the Soviet nuclear program during the Cold War. Wynne and his Russian source, Oleg Penkovsky (codenamed Ironbark), provided crucial intelligence that ended the Cuban Missile Crisis.

“Theatres have indicated gradual openings this summer, with health and safety guiding the way,” said Roadside co-president Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff. “If everything proceeds favorably, we feel the true spy thriller The Courier, with a must-see performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, is just the type of film that will have audiences excited to return to their local cinemas in late August.”

The Courier also stars Merab Ninidze, Rachel Brosnahan, and Jessie Buckley and tells the true story of a British businessman recruited by American and British intelligence to extract top secret information from a Soviet officer and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.

FilmNation fully financed and handled international sales on the feature, a 42, SunnyMarch, and FilmNation Entertainment production.

Dominic Cooke (On Chesil Beach) directed from Tom O’Connor’s (The Hitman’s Bodyguard) screenplay, and Adam Ackland, Ben Browning, Ben Pugh, and Rory Aitken served as producers.

Leah Clarke, Cumberbatch, Ashley Fox, Glen Basner, Alison Cohen, Milan Popelka, Cooke, O’Connor, and Josh Varney are the executive producers.
