The Devil All the Time is an upcoming American psychological thriller film based on the novel of the same name by Donald Ray Pollock. Directed and co-written by Antonio Campos and produced by Jake Gyllenhaal and Randall Poster, the film stars an ensemble cast comprising Tom Holland, Bill Skarsgård, Riley Keough, Jason Clarke, Sebastian Stan, Haley Bennett, Eliza Scanlen, Mia Wasikowska, and Robert Pattinson. The Devil All the Time will be released in select theaters and is scheduled to be released on Netflix on September 16, 2020.
The film was announced in September 2018, with Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Chris Evans, and Mia Wasikowska in talks to star. Antonio Campos would write and direct the film, with Jake Gyllenhaal serving as producer. In January 2019, Bill Skarsgård and Eliza Scanlen joined the cast, with Netflix set to distribute the film.
Sebastian Stan was cast to replace Evans after scheduling conflicts caused him to drop out and personally recommended Stan to be in his role. Additionally, Jason Clarke, Riley Keough, and Haley Bennett were announced as part of the cast. In March 2019, Harry Melling joined the cast of the film. Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans will compose the film's score.
Principal photography began on February 19, 2019, in Alabama, with filming locations including Anniston, Pell City, Birmingham, and Montevallo. Filming wrapped April 15, 2019
In Knockemstiff, Ohio and its neighboring backwoods, sinister characters — an unholy preacher (Robert Pattinson), twisted couple (Jason Clarke and Riley Keough), and the crooked sheriff (Sebastian Stan) — converge around young Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) as he fights the evil forces that threaten him and his family. In anticipation of Netflix’s drama, the streamer has released a haunting new poster featuring all the movie’s stars.
The upcoming film is based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Donald Ray Pollock, in which a young man named Arvin, played by Tom Holland, is left to process his grief after his father kills himself as part of a religious sacrifice. Holland has previously expressed a desire to move towards more adult roles, and if the promotional material for The Devil All the Time is any indication, he has certainly done so.
A newly released poster from Netflix features the movie’s cast arranged in a sort of collage format, accented by a bleached white animal skull. While past posters have been meant to highlight the wealth of talent in this upcoming film, this poster serves a different purpose. Of course, Holland is center stage in the image, and we can see other celebrities like Robert Pattinson and Bill Skarsgard hidden in the shadows.
However, the focus isn’t on the actors themselves, since the definition in their faces and figures is washed out, much like an old photograph. It illustrates the darker imagery that can be found throughout Pollock’s novel and hints at the serious tone that will likely be found in this new movie
This new poster isn’t the first look into Netflix’s The Devil All the Time, however. A trailer for the movie was released in August, featuring a lot of the same imagery of death that can be found in this poster, as well as religious imagery including evil preachers and bloody men tied to crosses. Clearly, this new film from Antonio Campos will be a dark and gripping thriller unlike many of Netflix’s past projects.
In Knockemstiff, Ohio and its neighboring backwoods, sinister characters — an unholy preacher (Robert Pattinson), twisted couple (Jason Clarke and Riley Keough), and a crooked sheriff (Sebastian Stan) — converge around young Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) as he fights the evil forces that threaten him and his family. Spanning the time between World War II and the Vietnam war, director Antonio Campos’ THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME renders a seductive and horrific landscape that pits the just against the corrupted.
Based on the 2011 best-selling novel of the same name by Donald Ray Pollock, the film is set in post-WWII Ohio and follows a range of characters each reacting to the damages and disturbances they faced during the war.
Among the film’s collection of disturbed characters are a tormented veteran of the carnage in the South Pacific whose wife is dying with cancer, a husband-and-wife team of serial killers, a spider-handling preacher, and his crippled virtuoso-guitar-playing sidekick who are running from the law and at the center an orphaned boy who grows up to be a good but also violent man in his own right
