Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah is an upcoming American biographical drama film based on the life of Fred Hampton, chairman of the Black Panther Party in late 1960s Illinois. Directed and produced by Shaka King, the film was written by King and Will Berson, based on a story by King, Berson, and Kenny and Keith Lucas. The film stars Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield.

The movie is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 12, 2021, simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max for a month.

In February 2019, it was announced Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield had joined the cast of the film, with Shaka King directing from an original story by the Lucas Bros and a screenplay he wrote alongside Will Berson. Ryan Coogler will serve as a producer on the film, with Warner Bros. Pictures distributing. In September 2019, Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, and Ashton Sanders joined the cast of the film. In October 2019, Algee Smith joined the cast of the film.

Principal photography began in Cleveland, Ohio on October 21, 2019. On November 25 and 26, 2019, filming took place at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield. Production concluded on December 19, 2019. Originally announced as Jesus Was My Homeboy, the film was later reported as being titled Judas and the Black Messiah before being described as untitled. In July 2020, the film's title was confirmed to be Judas and the Black Messiah.

The film's score is being composed by Mark Isham. In the late 1960s, petty criminal William O'Neal agrees to work as an informant for the FBI in order to take down Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton.

The historical drama, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, will debut on Feb. 12, 2021. Prior to Tuesday night’s announcement, the studio had delayed the movie to early 2021 but hadn’t set an exact date. “The Movie” was initially scheduled for August of 2020, however, it was postponed because of the pandemic.

Judas and the Black Messiah,” along with the rest of Warner Bros. slate for the next 12 months, is landing simultaneously on the company’s streaming service HBO Max and in theaters. “Wonder Woman 1984,” “Dune” and “The Matrix 4” are among the 18 films following the day-and-date hybrid release strategy. Those titles will be available on HBO Max for a month.

Warner Bros. recently made additional changes to its calendar, shifting around plans for “Mortal Kombat,” “Tom and Jerry” and Hugh Jackman’s sci-fi drama “Reminiscence.” “Reminiscence” was taken off the release schedule, while the other two movies were moved to new dates in 2021.

“The movie” was directed by Shaka King and written by King and Will Berson, based on a story by King, Berson, and brothers Kenny and Keith Lucas. The film is based on the life and assassination of Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton. Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, and Martin Sheen round out the cast.

Ryan Coogler, the director of Marvel’s superhero blockbuster “Black Panther,” co-produced the film with Charles D. King (“Fences,” “Mudbound”). In a virtual panel in August, Coogler said he was “blown away” when King pitched him the project.

Chairman Fred Hampton is somebody whose life work, and the story of his assassination, has been relevant since the day [it] happened and only continues to become more relevant with context,” Coogler said. “But I also think that Shaka’s point of view, and how he wanted to tell the story, was also something that’s extremely relevant, as well.”

Warner Bros. drama Judas and the Black Messiah about Fred Hampton, the Illinois Black Panther Party Chairman who was betrayed by FBI informant William O’Neal, will open on Feb. 12, 2021, in both theaters and on HBO Max.

The studio is planning to push the Shaka King directed feature for the current 2020-21 awards season. The pic stars Daniel Kaluuya as Fred Hampton and LaKeith Stanfield as William O’Neal. A career thief, O’Neal revels in the danger of manipulating both his comrades and his handler, Special Agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons). Hampton’s political prowess grows just as he’s falling in love with fellow revolutionary Deborah Johnson (Dominique Fishback). Meanwhile, battle wages for O’Neal’s soul.

Will he align with the forces of good? Or subdue Hampton and The Panthers by any means, as FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen) commands?

The pic was originally dated for an Aug. 21 release, however, Warners temporarily pulled the film off the schedule due to the pandemic back in April.

The pic also stars Ashton Sanders, and Martin Sheen, Algee Smith, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Dominique Thorne, Amari Cheatom, Caleb Eberhardt, Lil Rel Howery.

Last year during awards season, Warner Bros had Just Mercy about world-renowned civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) and his story to free a wrongly condemned death row prisoner, Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx). Foxx received a SAG nomination for supporting actor.
